The air travel experience for wheelchair users is set to improve, thanks to the backing of Paralympic champion Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson. Grey-Thompson, a vocal advocate for disabled rights, has been a victim of the current system's shortcomings, with her wheelchair being lost on a flight and later returned in pieces. She believes that the proposed fines for airlines failing disabled travellers are a significant step forward, but also calls for better assessment of damage and clearer accountability. Grey-Thompson's personal experience highlights the need for change, as she faced absurd attempts by the airline to return her lost property, tagged to a different airport and another name. This lack of proper data and clear responsibility is a major issue, making it difficult for disabled passengers to seek help and compensation. The Bill, which has been backed at its second reading, aims to introduce new rules on flights, lost luggage, and price transparency. Aviation Minister Keir Mather supports the Bill, stating that it will modernise UK aviation and strengthen the Civil Aviation Authority's enforcement powers. However, there are concerns that the Bill does not go far enough, with calls for clearer disabled passengers' rights to be written directly into the law. Paralympic gold medallist Lord Christopher Holmes of Richmond warns that the draft lacks specific protections for disabled, older, and younger travellers, suggesting that an 'inclusive-by-design statutory duty' would be a huge step forward. Labour peer Baroness Theresa Griffin of Princethorpe shares a similar experience, having been left in airport 'holding pens' and given colouring pencils while travelling to Strasbourg. The government's response to these concerns is to act and improve the situation, as it does not accept that the current system is inevitable. The new laws will modernise UK aviation, support the redesign of airspace, and enhance aviation safety standards, while also delivering greater passenger protections. This is a positive step towards a more inclusive and accessible air travel system, but there is still work to be done to ensure that all disabled passengers receive the support and assistance they need.
